A new blog series demonstrating how the “Big Four” of the commercetools commerce platform architecture – Microservices, API, Cloud, Headless – can propel you full-speed into the future of digital commerce.

commercetools Microservices API Cloud Headless

Consumers now have more choices than ever when it comes to shopping. Coupled with increased adoption and use of mobile and non-traditional devices, retailers – in order to innovate rapidly – must adopt modern approaches and solutions.  commercetools recognized this trend and knew that commerce platforms built for desktops could not keep pace with the fast-moving omnichannel world. Commerce platform software needed to be redesigned from the ground up.

In 2013, commercetools launched the industry’s first cloud-native, headless commerce platform; defining the future of digital commerce. Using microservices, companies can quickly, easily and reliably move from existing monolithic systems to an e-commerce solution that can easily keep pace with the rapid developments in online commerce.

The success of our customers so far is proof that the MACH architecture works. Over the past few years, commercetools has grown immensely from a start-up to a major global player in enterprise eCommerce software. The four letters in MACH mark the four cornerstones of our platform.

From Monolith to MACH – Innovate faster with a more modern commerce platform

In this new blog series, we’re taking a deeper look at each major component of the commercetools platform. For the first installment, we’ll talk about “M” for Microservices – a development methodology being adopted by retailers and brands which allows a high degree of flexibility and customization of commerce-related services. In the second installment, we’ll move into “A” for API-first architecture. You will learn how commercetools API interfaces make connection, integration and expansion of the e-commerce system incomparably agile. The third installment will be “C” for Cloud-native, which will explain how our platform is completely hosted in the cloud, making it almost infinitely scalable. This feature is especially critical for supporting peak times like Black Friday and flash sales. In the final article of this series, we will cover “H” for Headless commerce. You will learn more about the advantages of decoupling your frontend and backend applications, and which industries are already benefiting from transitioning to a headless commerce architecture.

Let’s start with M, the Microservices for modern commerce.
