The reta awards are presented to global retail companies and their technology partners for their brilliant and innovative use of technology.

This year, we at commercetools, are honored to receive the “Top Supplier Retail Award 2021” in the “Best Connected Retail Solution” category thanks to the remarkably comprehensive omnichannel solution we created with Salling Group.

It’s conclusive: when you partner with commercetools, you are getting an award-worthy experience. Using our technology, Salling Group was able to design a commerce platform that was so modern and ground-breaking, that it secured a prestigious reta award. (As a side note, Merkur, another commercetools’ customer, is also receiving a reta award!) The reta awards are presented by the EHI Retail Institute, which provides data on retail-related topics, and the Lebensmittel Zeitung, the leading trade and business newspaper of consumer goods in Germany.

A prize-winning partnership

Founded over 100 years ago, Salling Group is Denmark’s largest retailer with 1,600 shops and owns several chain stores, including Netto, Føtex, Bilka and Salling, as well as the Starbucks and Carl’s Jr. franchises in Denmark. They own a large diversity in concepts varying from offline shops and department stores to pure players, click-and-collect concepts and subscription models.

With such a variety of shopping models, it was crucial for Salling Group to be able to define the online character and content for each of their brands on a joint technology architecture. That’s why, when they defined their new commerce platform goals, strengthening the omnichannel customer journey and moving to a scalable, customizable solution in the backend, were at the top of their priorities list. 

So when it was time to migrate their commerce solution to a more optimized platform, Salling Group came knocking on commercetools’ door. That’s because the first technical decision they made when they were regarding their commerce architecture was to go headless, and commercetools, aside from being the trailblazers of headless technology, offered a quick and easy way to migrate their previous systems to a new setup. Likewise, working with the development team at Salling Group was a source of inspiration for commercetools’ own tech innovation and roadmap.

The fact that this award is given for a collaboration fits in with our corporate philosophy, because we see ourselves as a partner for the companies that choose our software. We work with them to create the best possible user experience for their customers.

The solution that won the reta award

With commercetools, Salling Group can now offer a comprehensive omnichannel experience for its online shoppers, as well as tailored content for each of their brands. Thanks to the headless architecture of the platform, changes and adjustments can be made quickly and flexibly without affecting current webshop operations. There is also the consolidation of data on one platform now that provides consistent pricing, product information and discounts across all channels.

The new solution, which enables an expeditious two-month lead time on establishing new storefronts, saves 75 percent in maintenance costs as a result of lower operational expenses in general and the consolidation of their web shops from two to one platform. And it has also, in the meantime, increased online sales by 20 percent through the “Click & Collect” function alone, which they were quickly able to implement during lockdown times.

According to the jury’s statement, commercetools has proven itself as a technology partner with an “outstanding solution with extraordinary strategic benefits for retail partners.”
